Learn about the history of traditional Hindu music, with a focus on Karnatic music. This course looks into the rich and varied traditions of Hindu music, which is also called Shastriya Sangeet, with a focus on how Karnatic music has changed over time. Students will learn about the history of Indian music, from the ancient Sama Vedic chants to the musical differences of the Natyasastra of Bharata muni and the Silappathikaram to the Bhakti movement of the first millennium. The course also looks at how texts like the Sangita Ratnakara and the Chaturdandi Prakasika changed over the course of the 2nd millennium and how Islamic and Arab/Persian traditions affected Indian music. Students will learn about the history and current state of Indian music in India and the diaspora through a mix of lectures, discussions, reading assignments, and guided listening experiences. Join us on a journey through the fascinating history of traditional Indian music and learn more about the unique and complex cultural heritage of Hindu music, including Karnatic music. The History of Shastriya Sangeet: This Course gives a guided tour of the rich history and development of traditional Indian music, with a focus on Hindu music. Through lectures and readings, we will learn about the composers, sages, saints, emperors, and other famous people who have helped music grow and change over time. We will get to the heart of Indian music traditions by focusing on "the raga" and "the tala." We will also look at what the different traditions have in common, such as their spiritual roots and long history. The goal of this course is to give a full picture of how traditional Indian music and Hindu music have changed over time. The course's learning goals are: Talk about the names and works of music scholars and famous musicians, such as Bharata's Natya Sastra, Illango Adigal'sSilappathikaram, Sarangdev's Sangita Ratnakara, Venkatamakhi'sChaturdandi Prakasika, SubbaramaDikshitar's Sangita Sampradaya Pradarsini, and Pandit Bhatkhande's work. Learn what traditional Indian music and Hindu music have brought to the study and view of Indian music in the West. Talk about what the Bhakti movement and the Hindu saints of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Bengal have done for Indian art music. Look at what Vaggeyakaras and the sacred geography of India have brought to Art music. Talk about how Islamic and Persian traditions have changed Indian music. Look at what the Devadasi tradition has brought to Indian art. Look at the problems that Indian music faces today. How Classes Work :- This class will meet with students for at least one hour per week. During this time, people will be encouraged to talk, argue, and think about what they have heard and read. The content of each session will be over in an hour, but discussion can go on for up to 30 minutes after that. The students will also have to write two short essays over the course of the class. These essays don't have to be good enough for college, but they should show what they've learned.
